EMTONE is a non-invasive treatment that simultaneously delivers mechanical and thermal energy using radiofrequency (RF) and targeted pressure energy (TPE) to treat and reduce cellulite alongside improving skin tone and texture and tightening loose or lax skin.
At ERA Skin and Laser Clinic in Thame, Oxfordshire, we know how difficult it can be to shift stubborn cellulite – diet and exercise seem ineffective – but we love the EMTONE because it provides a unique solution that works by targeting the five factors that contribute to causing cellulite and loose skin – enlarged fat chambers, damaged collagen fibres, loss of skin elasticity, poor blood flow, and metabolic waste accumulation. Cellulite effects mostly women, but we can treat men too, and dieting and exercising rarely improve it, so even those who are regular gym goers can still notice the tell-tale dimpling or orange-peel appearance of cellulite. To improve the skin tone and smooth the dimpling, we need to improve circulation, target the fatty deposits, and stimulate new collagen to improve the connective tissue tone and thickness beneath the skin.
Results are long-lasting and leave you with a more toned, smooth appearance, with no downtime. The treatment is suitable for all skin types and all body types, having no BMI restrictions.
When the targeted pressure energy and radiofrequency are combined in the EMTONE treatment, they have a synergistic effect. This means that together they are better than if either technology was used on its own or use sequentially to treat cellulite.
The EMTONE synergy acts to combat the five mains causes of cellulite by diminishing the fat chambers within the tissue; remodelling the collagen fibres that have become damaged and pushed out of shape by the fat so your body is stimulated to produce new and better collagen within your skin; restoring your skin elasticity and tone to help combat the orange peel effect from cellulite; increasing your circulation to improve blood flow to the area; and improving your lymphatic drainage which acts as a metabolic waste removal service to maintain healthier tissue. By targeting all of these, we can address the root causes of cellulite on your thighs and buttocks and improve the appearance and elasticity of your skin on your abdomen, knees, and upper arms.
What are the benefits of EMTONE?

What areas of the skin can be treated?
The EMTONE is uniquely designed to treat the five causes of cellulite and target loose skin using the combined technologies and effects from radiofrequency for a thermal effect and targeted pressure energy for a mechanical effect.
EMTONE disrupts the fat cells to reduce their overall size, heats the connective tissue around the fat to stimulate remodelling of the deeper dermal layers making the body produce new collagen and elastin to rejuvenate and smooth the dimpled skin. The targeted pressure energy has a mechanical action that increases blood flow and improves the action of the lymphatic system to metabolise and expel waste from deep within the tissue.
EMTONE is suitable for both men and women, and all skin types. It can be used to treat cellulite on all sides of the thighs and buttocks, to tighten loose skin on the abdomen or tummy (post weight loss or post childbirth), and around the knees. It can also be used to improve skin laxity on the underside of the upper arms to treat bingo wings. It is, however, not a weight loss treatment.
We have other systems within the EM family at ERA Skin and Laser Clinic, near Oxford, including EMSCULPT which can be combined with EMTONE to improve body toning by targeting the underlying muscles as well as reducing fat and cellulite.
Will I need a consultation for EMTONE?
Yes, you will need to attend a consultation before you can undergo treatment with EMTONE to take a full medical history and rule out any underlying medical conditions, allergies, medications, or implants which would make you unsuitable for this treatment. If you are generally in good health, you should be able to have an EMTONE treatment as it is suitable for men and women and all skin types.
What can I expect during treatment?
The EMTONE treatment is carried out with you lying comfortably on a couch. Before we can start the procedure, a single-use, neutral electrode must be placed on the skin on your back, around the area of your shoulder blade on your right. It has an adhesive layer and will be pressed firmly onto your skin for full contact. This ensures that the radiofrequency flows between the applicator and the neutral electrode safely.
The EMTONE applicator also has an embedded infrared thermometer so we can be sure that the optimal temperatures are monitored and maintained during treatment to effectively target the cellulite and tighten the skin.
Your skin will be cleansed, and a gel applied to help the EMTONE applicator glide across your skin as it is rolled over the area being treated with full contact during treatment.
How long does EMTONE take?
Each treatment session with EMTONE will take approximately 20-30 minutes, or up to 45 minutes if we are treating multiple areas.
How many treatment sessions are recommended?
A bespoke treatment programme will be designed for you to achieve the optimal results and will depend on the area being targeted and the severity of the cellulite, and/or skin laxity.
Typically, you may be recommended between 4 and 8 treatments, although on average most patients undergo 4, with treatment scheduled weekly or twice weekly. Ongoing, we recommend periodic maintenance treatments every 6-12 months, alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise.
What conditions are contraindicated for EMTONE treatment?
If you are generally in good health, you should be able to have EMTONE treatment. However, there are certain medical conditions that will preclude you from treatment, and we can discuss alternative options for you following a full consultation where your medical history will be evaluated.
Certain underlying medical conditions can mean that you are contraindicated for treatment. Examples include those which affect your heart, kidneys, or liver, diabetes, epilepsy, cancers, neurological disorders, or factors which impact on healing, scarring, blood coagulation, or immune system function.
Similarly, if you have an active bacterial, viral, or fungal skin infection in the area to be treated, this will need to be managed and resolved first. Other skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, rosacea also require management. Isotretinoin (Roaccutane) use should not be within the last 12 months.
If you have any permanent implants near the area to be treated or near the location of the neutral electrode required to be placed on your back during treatment, including metal implants, you cannot be treated with radiofrequency. The same is true for electrical implants anywhere in the body, such as pacemakers or internal defibrillators.
If you are pregnant, breast feeding or undergoing fertility treatment, you will also not be able to have treatment.
Does EMTONE hurt?
The EMTONE treatment is a non-invasive procedure. As the combined energies of radiofrequency and targeted pressure energy are applied to the treatment area, you can expect to feel a heating or warming sensation and some mild pressure or mechanical vibrations from the massage element. This is not painful and is well tolerated by most people, often compared to a hot stone or deep tissue massage.
If you feel any significant discomfort, your practitioner is on hand to help and adjust the settings. They will be monitoring your treatment throughout and regularly asking you how you feel.
Is there downtime after a EMTONE treatment?
After your EMTONE treatment session, you can return to your normal daily routine and work immediately with no downtime or recovery required. You will likely experience some slight swelling, redness, and mild tenderness to the area treated after each session due to the action of the heating and mechanical massage, but this should resolve within 24 hours.
It is important to keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water whilst undergoing an EMTONE treatment programme as this will aid your body with flushing out the metabolic waste from within the deeper tissue to improve lymphatic drainage to the area, and aid in skin smoothing. Post-treatment advice will be provided.
When will I see results?
You will start to notice an improvement in the tone of your skin and the appearance of cellulite a few weeks after your first treatment, you need to give your body a little time to kick into action. Although you may notice some immediate tightening due to tissue contraction, the results are incremental as your body is stimulated to produce new collagen and elastin to improve the skin texture and tighten the dermal layers. Similarly, the mechanical massage will help to improve blood circulation, kick start the metabolic action, and improve lymphatic drainage to remove the broken-down cellulite. The area will continue to improve after each treatment session, and you can expect to see the optimal result approximately 3-4 months after your last treatment session.
How long does am EMTONE last?
To maintain the optimal results from EMTONE, it is vital that you also maintain a healthy lifestyle with a good diet and regular exercise to avoid future weight gain and a reoccurrence of cellulite formation.
The improvements in the appearance of cellulite are long-lasting with most patients reporting a result lasting a year or more; we recommend a top-up treatment every 3, 6 or 12 months to keep your results on top form.
We find that the results achieved with EMTONE in significantly improving the appearance of cellulite act as a great motivator for further efforts to improve body shape and tone, either in the gym or using other treatments we can offer at ERA Skin and Laser Clinic, including EMSCULPT.
